Company profile

The origins of the company, started by Jim Edgeworth, began in retail shop premises in Darlington in the early seventies, it was there that the forerunners of the current TORQUE product range of amplification equipment was conceived.
The early amplifiers were made in small quantities for retail sale through the shop and the experience gained in these early days dealing direct with working musicians has proved invaluable as the business has expanded.

The success of the first products led to an approach by a major UK national distributor who commissioned a range of amplifiers under their own brand name, which they marketed in place of their existing range, which had been imported from the far east.
This first major contract initiated the formation of the limited company in 1978 and a move to a 2,000 sq. ft. 'starter workshop' on the Chilton industrial estate. During this 'cosseted' period, we were able to draw on a wealth of experience from our distributor, a large professional organisation and this was of great value in the development of Edgeworth Electronics Limited.

Within a couple of years we purchased a 5,000 sq. ft. factory in Darlington, the only problem being, that we had "all our eggs in one basket".
The deep recession of the the early eighties caused tremendous difficulties in the UK music trade and many retailers were forced into liquidation, the downturn in sales forcing our sole customer to cancel all of their orders. This seemingly disastrous situation was in fact the necessary catalyst to force us to widen our customer base and look very hard at our future marketing strategy, we also expanded into other product areas such as security and industrial warning devices.

Within a short time we were supplying several UK distributors with products designed specifically for them and the company began to grow. Following a visit to the Frankfurt international music exhibition, in conjunction with one of our new customers, we started to export to Europe in a very small way. After a period of successful trading we realised that expansion of the export business was the best way forward for the company but that we lacked the necessary marketing skills. It was at this point that we decided to employ the services of an experienced export agent, on a commission only basis, allowing us to concentrate our efforts on design and production.
The resultant growth, not only in western Europe, but also in Russia, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa and Nigeria, required further expansion of the production facilities and this was achieved with the purchase of a 7,000 sq ft building which we extensively converted to suit our requirements. However within a short time the continued growth was demanding additional space, the problem being solved, on a temporary basis, by renting an adjoining building of some 2,500 sq.ft, giving us 10,000 sq.ft. in total.

In 1989, plans were laid to increase the production facility to 15,000 sq. ft., and in 1990, with a great deal of assistance from both the Darlington industrial development officers and elected councillors, both labour and conservative, land was purchased from Darlington Borough Council at the Yarm road industrial estate and building contracts placed. The new factory was completed by the end of 1990 and production transferred from the old premises in January 1991.

Our market research indicated continued expansion of existing export markets as the product brand name was established, with additional growth being achieved by developing markets in Eastern Europe.

In May 2003 Manufacturing completely redesigned and replaced to China. New production is updated and includes all innovations existing in market of today. The Torque products today have very reliable q uality at more than attractive price.
